On December 12th your child’s progress report will be viewable in Home Access Center (for directions, please visit: http://www.scasd.org/Page/27251) so we wanted to provide information regarding our revised elementary progress report that was utilized for the first time last year. The feedback families provided in our end of year survey suggested that most families could easily access the online progress report and that most families found the progress report helpful in understanding their child as a student.
The purpose of our progress report is to communicate with families and students about the achievement of grade level expectations: how well students have met established learning goals, highlight successes, and guide improvements. The progress report is not meant to be a summary of grade level curriculum, but rather a snapshot of how well a student is achieving in relation to broad subject standards. Specific K-5 curriculum scope and sequence charts are available on our website, that support achievement indicators for each standard. In addition, conferences are scheduled in the fall and spring around student goals.
This progress report indicates achievement of grade level SCASD standards for each content area as well as the effort a student demonstrates throughout the learning process. Reporting effort separately helps clarify the learning that has occurred in relation to the grade level expectations. The standards based approach of the progress report provides a way for families to learn how well their child is performing based on the standards rather than a letter grade. Given the information about student progress in relation to standards, letter grades are not needed to communicate student progress in grades K-5, art, music, and physical education. Progress is reported using the following achievement indicators for each standard:
Exceeding grade level expectations for this time of year
Meeting grade level expectations for this time of year
Approaching grade level expectations for this time of year
Not yet meeting grade level expectations for this time of year
Reminders About Our New Progress Reports
1) Progress reports are standards-based. Students are expected to meet grade level standards by the end of the school year. Detailed information about grade level standards can be found on our web site at: http://www.scasd.org/Page/27239.
2) Progress is communicated through achievement indicators. These indicators report out on where your child is working for this time of year. Achievement indicators include exceeding, meeting, approaching, or not yet meeting grade level standards.
3) “Not currently emphasized” indicates that a specific standard was not a focus for the current marking period.
4) "AG" is used for students working on alternate goals. Students with an IEP or receiving ESL services may have AG indicated on their progress report for certain areas.
5) Students in grades K - 5 do not receive letter grades.
