Happy Friday, GW Families!
I wanted to make you aware of an email that all SCASD principals shared with teachers yesterday concerning the election and our school community. Our amazing teachers have handled questions and comments so well this week and we haven't had any concerns whatsoever. :)
I also wanted to share some resources from today's bike/pedestrian safety lessons with Officer Snyder. The lessons went very well and you may find the resources useful in facilitating conversations at home.
The letter to teachers regarding the election was as follows:
Hello Everyone,
Our most recent presidential election has brought attention to many of the divisions that exist in our nation. Many Americans were surprised by the outcome of the election. In the course of the past twenty-four hours we have had many students express concerns and fears.
Moving forward, it is important for us to communicate to students that our focus is to provide a quality education for all students in a safe and caring environment.
As educators we need to be watchful that the divisive and negative tone that characterized the recent election does not interfere with learning or contribute to a sense of insecurity for students.
Donald Trump, as President-Elect, has promised to be a president for all Americans. Our democracy is one that has, for generations, been characterized by a peaceful transition of power from one administration to the next. As educators we are in a unique position to teach students that they have a voice and how to use their voices appropriately and effectively.
If you would like to share more information with students regarding the electoral process, there are several resources listed below. In addition, you may find other excellent resources on-line, as these materials are being written and developed on a continual basis.
Thanks for all you do!
Kris
Below are two links to videos that Officer Snyder showed our students in today's presentations. Please use them as talking points for discussions at home.
Enjoy the weekend and don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
