Dear Gray's Woods Families –

Given this weekend’s events involving the SCASD student posting a threatening image and message on Instagram, I want to share with you how we are addressing students’ questions that arise during the school day. Many students may be unaware of the incident; however, if students bring up the incident at school, the teachers plan to respond generally stating that the incident was unfortunate and has been resolved quickly so that all students are safe.

In addition, as with many sensitive subjects, our teachers will direct students who have more specific questions or concerns to discuss those questions with their families at home. In the case of extreme student anxiety or concern, the school counselor and student’s family will be notified.

Finally, our teachers will use these conversations with students as opportunities to reinforce the importance of digital citizenship - being a responsible, safe user of technology. Teachers at every grade level lead interactive Digital Citizenship lessons that focus on successful and safe access and use of technology.

For more information on the topics of our digital citizenship lessons, visit http://www.scasd.org/Page/31707.

As always, our first focus is to make our students feel safe at all times. We appreciate any feedback you’d like to provide. Please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime with further questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Kristen L. Dewitt

Principal
